Via Mestres 2000
(Bodega Caves Mestres)
Cavas Mestres is one of the most iconic family wineries in its region, boasting a long history, which dates back to 1312 and has produced 28 successive generations of wine producers. Situated in a historic building, officially in the town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, this cava house is known for the production of cavas from a large selection of grapes from its own vineyards, which undergo very long ageing, and on which they use a natural cork stopper with a metal clip during secondary fermentation. Cavas Mestres produces two lines of cava, Goumet and Barrica.
After a period of some uncertainty about its future, it appears that the winery is back on track, offering the high quality products to which we had become accustomed.
Appearance
Golden yellow with old gold tints. Fine bubbles.
Nose
Powerful, ripe aromas, with an exceptional autolysis expression (roasted nuts, pastries, quince) and wilted flowers. A certain old wine character.
Palate
Big and ripe. Full flavoured on the palate with pronounced and pleasant reductive aromas from its classic ageing (nuts, lees, macerated citrus peel, toasted spice). Very long aftertaste with a fine bitter touch.
Comment
Part of the Barrica line, this is one of the company's most personal cavas and faithful to the house style, with over 12 months in barrel followed by more than 130 months' bottle ageing. It comes from vineyards which are over 50 years old and is a very complex cava which need time to breathe in the glass before it shows us its fine reductive character.
In this vintage we are presented with an attractive, complex range of aromas in a cava which is mature and extremely delectable on the palate. Ideal for those who want to discover the oxydative and reductive aromas which can be found in great cavas.
Recommended with roast turkey, stuffed with apple and nuts.
