Sotheby´s Auctions

The auctioneering world is sometimes viewed as a little bit “peculiar”.  Collectors, speculators and art lovers?  Or snobs, odd types and tycoons?  Normally, we associate auctions with the sale of art or  objects owned by the rich and famous…

However, from this issue of Selectus Wines, we will be reporting on auctions taking place in the wine world, not just any type of wine auction, but specifically the very high-profile auctions, which Sotheby’s carries out with some regularity around the world.

One of these high-profile auctions took place in London on 14 June.  The “Finest & Rarest Wines Auction” at Sotheby's in London achieved a sale total of £828,270 ($1,060,186), exceeding estimates of between £500,270 and £631,170, and with 94% of the lots sold.

In the words of Stephen Mould, Head of Sotheby's Wine, Europe "prices, in particular for Burgundy, were sensational….," especially the rare vintages from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, achieving multiples of their estimates.  According to its spokesman, Stephen Mould, Sotheby's conclusion from this auction is that "the overall result demonstrates the strength of the London wine market, which continues to attract a global audience".  The next auction is due to take place in mid-September... and they have high expectations for it... We will, of course, be keeping you informed...
