Sustainability

As the year draws to a close, I cannot begin this editorial without sending much love and support to all those in Spain affected by the devastating floods at the end of October, which have caused so much personal, economic and emotional hardship. You remain in my thoughts each day. AMUNT VALENCIA!

When we look up the definition of the Spanish word for "sustainability" (sostenibilidad) in the Royal Spanish Academy dictionary, we find a concise explanation: "the quality of being sustainable." To dig deeper, if we then look up "sustainable" (sostenible), the dictionary defines it as: "In ecology and economics, something that can be maintained over time without depleting resources or causing significant harm to the environment."

Sustainability is a constant topic of discussion and debate within the wine industry, but it begs the question: is truly 100% sustainable viticulture even possible?
In my humble and honest opinion, 100% sustainable viticulture does not exist. Wineries are making commendable progress in finding innovative solutions and alternatives to conserve resources and protect the environment. But, forgive me for saying this, achieving total sustainability feels virtually impossible. To achieve true sustainability, we would have to return to a time before industrialisation, when we got around by horse and cart. This is simply not feasible in the modern world.
Just think about it for a moment….

Now we are once again getting ready to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year. We look forward to 2025 with the hope that it will be better and brighter than the year now coming to an end.

In the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy your magazine!
