Maria Rémirez de Ganuza 2005
(Bodega Remírez de Ganuza)
Fernando Rémirez de Ganuza’s wines have already been tasted and rated in the past by Selectus Wines but we will never tire of saying how much we love them and how well defined they all are. Their five estates nestling in the Rioja Alavesa region, planted with old Tempranillo and Graciano vines, remain the starting point for their wines, the quality of which has been demonstrated by their recent international achievements. Critics awarded its Gran Reserva 2004 the pinnacle of 100 points. José Ramón Urtasun joined the work in 2010, the start of a new era for Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza.
Appearance
Intense cherry red hue of strong intensity. Seductive and bright, nimble in the glass.
Nose
Very expressive, with good weight of fruit. Creamy, lactic, followed by balsamic notes. Lovely complexity.
Palate
Full, delectable and pleasant. Aromas reminiscent of ripe black fruit, caramelized toasted notes, spices and a touch of liquorice. Really very good.
Comment
María is a wine to which Fernando is very emotionally committed. It pays tribute to the family’s deceased daughter and for this reason the proceeds of its sales are donated to various associations to help fund medical research, such as the Spanish Cancer Association or the Down Syndrome Foundation. María is a wine which comes from the La Coqueta vineyard, situated on a south facing slope very close to the Bodega. Only 3,000 bottles are produced and they always receive particularly close care and attention. The wine usually remains in barrel for 22 months and is composed mainly of Tempranillo. This wine is full of flavour, meaty and lasts forever on the palate. A fine wine reflecting their wonderful work for charity.
