Josefina Piñol Dulce 2012
(Celler Piñol)
Situated in the medieval village of Bats, on the edge of western Catalonia and sitting within the Terra Alta designation of origin, the Celler Piñol family-run winery boasts a long winemaking tradition, producing wines with a markedly Mediterranean character. In this location, almost untouched by time, the ancestral wisdom of its inhabitants has, over the years, created a line of wines renowned for their generous strength, less “domesticated” than in neighbouring regions. Celler Piñol practices organic and integrated viticulture. It makes its wines in an artisanal manner yet still applies the latest technology, respecting and integrating into a natural environment, which is a haven of peace and tranquility.
A veritable gem, this sweet red wine is one of the winery’s best kept secrets. Made from over-ripened grapes grown on centennial Garnacha vines, it spent 15 months in barrel so that the elixir of soft chocolaty fruit contained in its soul could finish rounding out in bottle. Silky, long and nicely aged, it is fresher than it looks, making it even more appealing to those who dislike cloying sweetness. It is currently one of the most popular sweet wines and really does deserve to be shared at the end of a meal, ideally with the family, as no-one will be able to resist this final sin.
