Celler Batlle Brut Gran Reserva 2002

Describing themselves as “Creators of Cava”, Gramona represents in the world of Cava what Beluga sturgeon represents to caviare. This family-run winery that now sees the fifth generation at the helm, started up in 1881 as a result of the union of two illustrious names in the Penedés, the Batlles and the Gramonas. Nowadays, the company is under the direction of Jaume and Xavier Gramona who have successfully maintained the essence of inherited tradition, respect for the environment and the purity of their wines, as well as having the ability to innovate and create new products which are much sought-after by consumers and very well received by the wine press, and always winners of various international awards.

Appearance

Straw yellow with goldcoloured glints. Rosary of fine beads, lively and constant.

Nose

Aromas of apple lightly baked in the oven, white fruit notes along with dried fruit and nuts, and pastry notes. Sprinkling of spice and vanilla.

Palate

Rather glyceric but very fresh. Pleasant mousse sensation. Full-fruit and toasty hints well-balanced, leaving the mouth with a clean feel.

Remarks

One of Europe’s legendary sparkling wines and an outstanding Cava. Made primarily with the Penedés region’s star grape variety, Xarel·lo, originating from the La Plana parcel and topped up with a drop of Macabeu, matured for more than 8 years in bottle on its lees and with a cork stopper, thus turning it into a well-aged Cava from an unrivalled terrain. This 2002 vintage comes over yet again as a wonderful exponent of the quality attained by Cava in recent years. Perfect for enjoying on special occasions when bubbles accompany the celebratory banquet. Versatility at its most expressive. Woodcock with pears would be a good pairing up to consider.
