Alabaster 2009
(Teso La Monja (Grupo Sierra Cantabria))
After figuring among those who have instigated the resurgence in quality in the Toro denomination of origin, the Egurens have embarked upon a new project in this same region. In 2009 they opened their new installations in the Teso la Monja winery with a very clear philosophy: to create powerful and elegant wines from very old vines of Zamora’s Tinta de Toro grapes.
Appearance
A dark cherry-red colour, very intense, with violet hues on the rim that reveal its lively youthfulness. Very high density. Fine and very noticeable tears that mark the glass.
Nose
Very complex, it needs to breathe and gradually begins to come into its own. Ripe black fruit, toasty notes from new barrels, not quite integrated yet but elegant, not strident. Underpinning this, a very balsamic background can be discerned.
Palate
Powerful, highly concentrated, with good balance between fruit and oak. With a refined, elegant and especially long finish. Extremely flavoursome.
Remarks
Alabaster is the precursor to the successful achievement of adapting, undertaken by the Eguren family in Toro, after selling their former brand and still believing it was possible to continue to make great wines in the region. Alabaster expresses character and terroir, with great depth, showing nuances from the pebble ground, incredible minerality, concentration and elegance that come to us from the pre-phylloxera vineyards which have created it. A huge wine, to keep for a minimum of two or three years longer, in order to discover its true potential. Given the power and concentration of this wine it is advisable to pair it with dishes that are noted for strong flavours such as larger game, red meat and highly seasoned stews or casseroles.
Serving temperature: from 16 to 18º C.
Recommended glass: Riedel, Vitis Collection, Syrah glass.
